Microorganisms associated with cancer involve viruses, bacteria, and parasites. Viruses include Epstein Barr virus, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, the herpesvirus associated with Kaposi's sarcoma, the human papillomavirus, the human T-cell leukemia virus 1, and the Merkel T-cell polyomavirus. Among the bacteria, it stands out Helicobacter pylori, among protozoans Plasmodium falciparum, and among parasites Schistosomas mansoni, japonicum, and haematobium, and the trematodes Opisthorchis viverrini, Opisthorchis felineus, and Clonorchis sinensis.
The good news is that in most cases there are preventive measures that prevent cancer from appearing.
Through genetic manipulation and with the important advances in genetic engineering, progress is being made in immunotherapy, oncolytic virotherapy, and bacterial therapy against cancer. The importance of a balanced microbiota in the prevention of a significant number of diseases, including cancer, is gaining more interest.
The book places special emphasis on preventive measures to avoid these types of cancers.
